Active pinners have noticed a significant drop in traffic generated by group boards. Despite this change, it is still worth including them in your Pinterest marketing. Group boards should be a key part of your Pinterest marketing strategy. Here's why.

The benefit of group boards

Even if posting your content on group boards may no longer be quite as effective as it used to be, there are great benefits to joining or creating a group board. Joining groups on any platform provides you with an opportunity to:

  • Gain exposure for your business
  • Connect with pinners who are interested in your content, products and services
  • Discover great content from other pinners that you can benefit from and share with your followers

How to find group boards

Even though group boards are a great way to communicate with your target audience, group boards that fit your activity can be very difficult to find. The most obvious ways to find them are:

KEYWORD SEARCH - Simply do a word search on “group boards” plus your ”area of interest” (photography, food, travel etc.). Click on “Boards” at the top of the page. This will return a list of boards (group & individual) that have these keywords in their board title and/or description.

SEARCH VIA OTHER PINNERS’ BOARDS - Find other active pinners in your industry or niche and check out which group boards they are a member of. See if there are any that are relevant to your audience and join the same boards. Follow the instructions to join the board or send a Pinterest message to the board owner (first contributor listed is the group board owner).

PINGROUPIE - A tool like Pingroupie can help you find some great boards, but these are mostly American boards and the list was quite outdated when I checked recently. It had not been updated for 5 months.

Pro tips to get the most out of group boards

There are a few things you should consider when choosing a group board to ensure you’ll benefit from it:

  • Are the members active? Is new content pinned regularly?
  • Do you have content that corresponds to the topic of the board?
  • Does it contain quality pins? Would you repin these pins?

The more actively you participate on a group board, the better your own pins posted on that board will do. Repin content from group boards you belong to. If you decided to become a member, it probably contains great content that resonates with your audience. Pinterest rewards active boards with more views.

Add the word “group board” to the title and/or description of your group board, so that your board has a chance of being shown in search results.

If you use Tailwind, you can check the virality and engagement score of the group boards you are a member of. It shows you which boards to focus on and which ones to drop. Spend your time and energy where you will get the most repins for your pins!

I am launching a group board initiative with a difference!

This is an experiment with a European angle. Starting with France. There is no easy way for European pinners to find group boards with quality content in their own language and relevant to their own culture. To make it a little easier to find these boards, I thought it would be interesting to do an experiment.

I have created a board where I am sharing links to French group boards. It is a directory for French language pinners looking for group boards with pins that are mostly in their native language.  The pins on this board each link to a group board. They have a category #hashtag and a dedicated colour. Clicking on a hashtag will pull up group boards for that particular category.

The selection criteria for the group boards listed on the French Group Directory:

  • The owner must be from or based in a French speaking country
  • The group board must contain a French board description
  • Boards with a description that contains instructions on how to join it get priority

Head over to The French Connection to discover the boards listed so far.
